The Warwickshire countryside contains miles of well-maintained canals, which were once the trading arteries of the country. Now, they offer ample opportunities for recreation, and what better way to enjoy them than with a luxury canal boat hire for a leisurely holiday.
Not only will you see some breath-taking wildlife and scenery, but you can take your pick of interesting stop-offs along the way. Here are just a few ideas to help you start planning your floating adventure.
Stratford-upon-Avon
The town of Stratford-upon-Avon is accessible via a canal which was constructed from the 1790s, over the course of 20 years in order to transport coal. The town is of course the birthplace of the celebrated playwright William Shakespeare, and you can visit his childhood home, which is still remarkably intact.
You can also see a performance at the world-renowned Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre, although it is advisable to book well in advance. The town enjoys a rich cultural scene, and there are many parks, gardens, and restaurants to relax and refresh yourself in.
Drayton Manor Theme Park
This family favourite is sited not far from the ‘Warwickshire ring’—that is, the circular route which is made up of a combination of the Coventry, Oxford, Grand Union and Birmingham & Fazeley Canals. You will travel through several locks to keep you busy, and there is docking available at Coleshill Road Bridge. From here it is a short journey to Drayton Manor.
The theme park boasts over a hundred rides and attractions, including a 15-acre zoo, Thomas Land, crazy golf, indoor play areas, and a 4D cinema. There are plenty of food and drink outlets which sell something for all tastes, and wheelchairs and children’s buggies can be hired for £10 plus a cash deposit of £10.
